Tree Pruning & reductions

We make reductions to a tree to remove its height or spread. By doing this we reduce wind resistance and take out the weight through the crown, both of which help to maintain your tree’s stability. More light will flood through the branches and our reduction skills will give your tree a natural and balanced look, bringing it back to a size and shape that will suit you.

Crown reductions

The crown is the foliage bearing part of the tree. Generally, the main reasons for crown reduction are to reduce the mechanical stress on either individual branches or the whole tree. This makes it better suited to its environment and reduces the amount of shading and loss of natural light.

All of our reductions are done in accordance with British Standards (3998) 2010 for tree work. With crown reduction we remove foliage from the tree’s canopy, but we keep the main framework of the crown and a reasonable amount of the leaf bearing branches which are needed to keep a tree healthy.

Thinning

We also provide tree thinning services, which we usually perform on hardwood trees. Tree thinning involves the removal of smaller branches, usually at the outer edge of the crown. Our work will help to reduce ‘sail’ in the branch structure, which will make the tree less wind resistant and more stable. Our thinning services can also greatly improve the visual impact and symmetry of trees which have a messy and dense canopy. Giving a consistent amount of foliage around evenly spaced branches, our thinning work lets in more light and helps air circulation around the crown of a tree.

Crown raising

Raising the crown means removing lower branches of the tree to raise the height of the canopy. This is ideal if you are wanting plants, shrubs, grass and hedges etc to grow more successfully underneath. To do this effectively, we artfully remove certain lower branches. This gives better access, lets in more light, opens up desirable views and also keeps branches out of the way of traffic and pedestrians.
