Seasonal

If you give your trees and shrubs proper care and maintenance all the year round, you’ll be enjoying them for a long to come. So to help you with this we provide tree care throughout the year, but there are some tasks that are best performed seasonally. These include seasonal pruning of shrubs, fruit trees and climbers.

At key points in the calendar we also provide insect and disease prevention measures. Synchronising with the seasons, we consider the timing of new growth, flowering and fruit production when we’re working on trees. By working in this way, we encourage healthy, long lived and beautifully shaped plants and trees.

Tree Pruning & reductions

We make reductions to a tree to remove its height or spread. By doing this we reduce wind resistance and take out the weight through the crown, both of which help to maintain your tree’s stability. More light will flood through the branches and our reduction skills will give your tree a natural and balanced look, bringing it back to a size and shape that will suit you.

Crown reductions

The crown is the foliage bearing part of the tree. Generally, the main reasons for crown reduction are to reduce the mechanical stress on either individual branches or the whole tree. This makes it better suited to its environment and reduces the amount of shading and loss of natural light.

All of our reductions are done in accordance with British Standards (3998) 2010 for tree work. With crown reduction we remove foliage from the tree’s canopy, but we keep the main framework of the crown and a reasonable amount of the leaf bearing branches which are needed to keep a tree healthy.

Thinning

We also provide tree thinning services, which we usually perform on hardwood trees. Tree thinning involves the removal of smaller branches, usually at the outer edge of the crown. Our work will help to reduce ‘sail’ in the branch structure, which will make the tree less wind resistant and more stable. Our thinning services can also greatly improve the visual impact and symmetry of trees which have a messy and dense canopy. Giving a consistent amount of foliage around evenly spaced branches, our thinning work lets in more light and helps air circulation around the crown of a tree.

Crown raising

Raising the crown means removing lower branches of the tree to raise the height of the canopy. This is ideal if you are wanting plants, shrubs, grass and hedges etc to grow more successfully underneath. To do this effectively, we artfully remove certain lower branches. This gives better access, lets in more light, opens up desirable views and also keeps branches out of the way of traffic and pedestrians.

Tree and Shrub planting

Planting is a job that you need to get right if you want your trees and shrubs to thrive. We can help; we’ll advise you on the best species for the site, soil type and location. Our selection will complement your other plants; making sure they will fit the space when fully grown and keep views and light uninterrupted. With our expertise, your plants will become well established and flourish for years to come.

Shrub planting

Using trusted local nurseries, we’ll supply you with the healthiest quality plants to suit flower beds and pots through to 3m tall hedges. Whether you need us to plan and design a complete garden makeover, or to simply revamp your borders, we can help. We’ll prepare the ground and use our knowledge and planting skills to bring you a border to be proud of.

Tree planting

We can recommend the best tree species to meet your needs; advising on trees for screening to give privacy through to ’feature’ trees, commemorative trees and large-scale planting. If you’re looking to the future we can provide and plant saplings, or if you require a more immediate solution, we can plant more mature specimens.

Our team uses a number of different methods before, during and after planting to ensure healthy and long-lasting trees and shrubbery. Correct planting is critical for tree health and we offer a full establishment guarantee on all stock that we have planted. We will assess your location, your needs and those of the tree and advise on the best approach from hand dig and tree spade techniques through to cranes for semi-mature stock.

Aftercare of your trees is also necessary; we can provide ongoing care and maintenance of your trees including watering, weeding, maintenance of drainage systems and formative pruning.

Pollarding - Height preservation

Pollarding

Pollarding is a pruning technique which we use to keep young trees and shrubs at a desired height. This is particularly useful to stop vigorous trees outgrowing their given space. Pollarding should be done every two to four years. To pollard, we choose a framework around which to cut to a certain length, and remove thinner branches coming from the main stem of the tree or shrub. Because pollarding stops branches getting to a size where they become unstable or too large, it’s an effective safe management practice for trees in urban environments. Our arborists can give you advice on which trees can be pollarded (as not all trees can) and what the best management strategy for your tree will be.

Felling and platform removal

tree is diseased, dead or dying, or it could be because it’s affecting the foundations of nearby buildings. Felling a tree means that we remove it completely and this can be done in two ways: through directional felling or sectional felling.

Directional felling

If there is enough room around the tree we use directional felling. This is when we take the tree down in one go. We do this from the ground, where we use precise cuts to make a hinge in the trunk and then take the tree down safely in one fell swoop. Our stringent safety measures and expertise ensure that the safety of your property and our staff is guaranteed.

Sectional felling

When space is confined, and directional felling isn’t possible, we remove the trees by sectional felling. Operating on the tree at height, we climb up using harnesses and ropes, and then use our expertise and experience to work with our tools and equipment within the tree. We remove the tree a section at a time and lower these sections safely to the ground.

Platform removal of dead and dying trees

Sometimes a tree is too high or too dangerous for us to climb, but there’s also not enough room to take it down in one go. This is when we use our specialist mobile elevated platforms, which we also use when there is only narrow access to the tree. Our platforms allow us to safely remove dead, dying and dangerous trees without needing to work within them. In the interests of the environment, as with all our tree removal, we can advise on suitable species that can be used as a replacement and we also offer replanting services.

Stump removal

Once a tree has been taken down the stump can either be left to decay naturally, be made into a feature, or it can be removed completely. Most people often prefer to the remove the stump but attempting it without the right tools is very labour-intensive.

As experienced tree surgeons we use powerful grinding machinery to quickly reduce the stump into chippings; destroying the stump to below ground level and severing the root system. The remaining hole can be filled with chippings which will gradually mulch down, leaving an even surface and excellent quality soil!

Stump grinding, Planting schemes

We were really pleased with the results we got from Paul and his team. They did a great job at grinding out the stumps in our garden and providing planting schemes for us, suggesting the best shrubs for the spaces that were left behind. Before they went the team made sure that we were happy with everything and they did a good job of leaving the garden as they found it. We are very happy to recommend them to others.
